will -- they're dumb! one of the competitors on this show, if you want to call them that, is jon stewart, i guess. i want to give you some idea. when we first came here, our very first show, i did a monologue 7 1/2 minutes. i remember the first 18 minute monologue and everybody freaked out. we now do 21 minute monologues to open the show. the first one was a thousand words. today, 2500 words. the first 21 minutes of the show. to give you perspective, jon stewart does six minutes. total time on air with guests, 22 minutes a night. our average without guests, all monologue, 42 minutes. jon stewart, here's jon stewart at the grammys or emmys or whatever they give for television. i don't know because i'll never win one, but here he is with his writers. he's got 15 writers for this segment. i believe he's had as many as 40 writers. he uses these writers for six minutes of television and a total of 22 minutes a night. whoa. i want to bring in my writers, bring them all in because we have never seen them. can you bring them? bring them in. oh, here they are. dan and pat. hi, dan. hi, pa

new finding suggests a higher risk of developing heart disease. dr. jon lapook has more. >> reporter: worrisome news for the more than 7 million americans who have taken chantix. a new analysis links the pill to a 72% increase in the risk of heart problems. johns hopkins dr. singh led the research. >> it is causing the same problems that we are trying to prevent, that's why it's not worth the risk. we need to prevent cardio disease among smokers, not increase. >> reporter: the review combines 14 studies involving more than 8,000 patients. while a 72% increased risk sounds alarming, the companion editorial titles, is it a heartbreaker? notes that cardiovascular problems including chest pain, heart attack and stroke are still rare. occurring in only about 1% of patients taking chantix. the drugmaker pfizer questions the way the analysis was conducted. dr. gail caldwell is vice president of medical affairs for pfizer. >> we will continue to do a more in-depth look as the fda is asking us to do but to date we have not seen evidence of important risks to the heart health of patients. from

did not expect. jon huntsman said in may he would not self-finance his presidential campaign even though he's rich enough to do that, at least in large part. today he didn't have to file any campaign fund-raising information, because he hasn't been declared for very long, but did say he raised about $4 million and his campaign would just say that he did contribute to his own coffering here. all they'll say, it wasn't a majority. only that what he gave is less than half. jon huntsman is, at least, sort of self-financing here and declaring it, and letting it be known. is that worrying in terms of his chances as a real candidate or encouraging because he has his own money to spend if he wants to? >> first of all, i don't understand the original statement. don't make a statement that you know can be disproved when the sec reports come out. and in terms of his fund-raising, i'm inclined to say, wait until the next cycle. i mean, jon huntsman has only been around for a little bit. i think his opening is that republicans who are not bachmann republicans decide that in the end he might ha

. bad news in the poll for jon huntsman. 2% of the vote. hundredsman can't catch a break in the endorsement game. his former chief of staff, utah congressman and future senator is endorsing mitt romney calling him more lectable. interesting number for you this morning in iowa. iowa republicans are souring on ethanol subsidies. in a new poll conducted by consumer voter research, for the iowa republican 47% of likely republican caucus goers have a very or somewhat positive view of a candidate who wants to cut ethanol subsidies. 24% have a negative reaction to that. finally overnight, tim pawlenty's numbers got higher. he's bringing in the daughter of mike huckabee to run his campaign. she helped put together that campaign in iowa for her dad to win the caucuses and finish second in the straw poll. in an effort to engage the young and tech savvy the president is holding a tweet up this afternoon. topic is the economy and jobs but the thousands of 140 character or less queries submitted versus the ask obama hash tag includes marijuana legalization. and the rnc is going up with an ad

paul, jon pawlenty, ron paul, jon huntsman, that does not even add up to 15 million. it is still seen as a slow money raising cycle? guest: because mitt romney had done the things that were necessary to get off to a fast start. relative to the rest of the field, however, when you look at this point in the 2008 cycle, mitt romney raised more than $20 million. rudy giuliani, $17 million. john mccain, the eventual nominee, $11 million. three big guns out front, competing against an open democratic field, we did not know that president obama's fund-raising operation would be the juggernaut that it turned out to be. at that point, with an unknown opponent, there was more fund- raising by individual candidates and folks using the gop nomination than we see at this point in a comparable cycle where we do know who the opponent is going to be. they know that money will be important and yet the numbers are substantially behind. it is disappointing. it has to be a letdown for the republican field. host: kenneth vogel we're talking kenneth about fund raising in campaign 2012. if you want to get i

: we are back live jon hilsenrath of "the wall street journal." taking a look at this week's economic rebound, that is what the- taking a look at weak economic rebound. here is the headline from "the wall street journal" this morning, "companies bracing for the fall." guest: american companies are operating in a very uncertain environment right now. they have been disappointed by what happened in the first half and have been talking to companies over the last few days. they were expected to have a good pickup in spending in the first half of the year and it did not happen. whether or not they have cut inventories or are deciding whether or not to cut back beyond that, what they do not want is uncertainty, which is what they are getting. host: the chief at the financial times is saying that for his business, small and mid-sized companies are pulling back and are not sure. guest: right. this is largely because of the uncertainty that they face. there is a risk of financial disruption. the faults, downgrades. you never really know how investors are going to react. ironically, we have see

the first major quarter of 2007. tim pawlenty expected to bring in less than 5 million. jon huntsman raised a little over 2 million throwing his own money at 4 million. ron paul told supporters he's raised over $4 million. the number though everybody is watching what will the michele bachmann number be? she can transfer money from the house campaign. was she able to get in the internet and direct mail money in in time? will the number be forth of 5 million? will it be north of 10? that would be somewhat of a surprise. meanwhile, a siren for the supporters of rick perry, he's scouting out a vendor pot at the straw poll. it's our understanding perry won't get into the race until after he has the national day of prayer on august 6th. the straw poll is basically a week later. he wouldn't get in before then bupt the straw poll could be a way to see if that's the launching point and he gets in sometime in late august in time for those three debates that mitt romney and company are competing in in september. meanwhile, though there are no firm numbers yet, we're expecting a big quarter from
